Bannau Brycheiniog is the practical choice if you're travelling from Bristol, Birmingham or the M4 corridor — you can be parked up with the engine off in under two hours from most of the West Midlands. It's also a Dark Sky Reserve, and considerably less booked-out than Snowdonia for the same night sky.
Drive times are fair-weather estimates, not promises — check before you commit to a tight schedule.
Where to stay in Brecon Beacons
The central Beacons around Brecon and Talybont are the classic base. The Black Mountains in the east, towards Crickhowell and Hay, are prettier and have the better pubs. The western end around the Waterfall Country near Ystradfellte is the most dramatic and the least developed.
When to book
Less extreme than the coast. Weekends year-round are the pressure point rather than whole seasons — midweek breaks in November and January can be genuinely cheap. Hay Festival week in late May takes out the entire east of the park.
