Clwydian Range

Bryniau Clwyd

Heather ridges and hillforts, an hour from Manchester.

The Clwydian Range and Dee Valley AONB is north-east Wales, and it is the fastest scenic escape from the north-west of England — under an hour and a half from Manchester or Liverpool. The ridge is a line of heather-covered hills topped with Iron Age hillforts, with Moel Famau the best known.

Where to stay in Clwydian Range

Llangollen in the Dee valley is the liveliest base, with the canal, the steam railway and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Ruthin and Llandegla put you right under the ridge. Mold is the practical eastern end, closest to the motorway.

When to book

Very weekend-weighted because of the proximity to English cities. Midweek is easy nearly all year. Late August into September is when the heather turns and the ridge is at its best.
