Mid Wales
Canolbarth Cymru
Empty green hills, and the best value in the country.
Mid Wales is the bit people drive through. Powys is the largest county in Wales and one of the least densely populated areas in Britain, which means hills, sheep, red kites and very little else. If your priority is a hot tub with nobody within earshot, this is where the pound goes furthest.
Where to stay in Mid Wales
The Montgomery and Welshpool side is gentle border country, close to Shropshire and easy to reach. Around Machynlleth and the Dyfi valley you get forest and the edge of Snowdonia. The Elan Valley near Rhayader is reservoirs and moorland, and is the most remote-feeling of the three.
When to book
Barely seasonal. Availability is good most of the year and rates stay reasonably flat, which makes this the reliable fallback when Snowdonia and Pembrokeshire are full.
