Gower Peninsula
Penrhyn Gŵyr
Britain's first AONB, and a short peninsula packed with it.
Gower was the first place in Britain designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, back in 1956, and the whole peninsula is only about nineteen miles long. That compression is the appeal — you can be at Rhossili in the morning and the Loughor estuary in the afternoon without a serious drive.
Where to stay in Gower Peninsula
South Gower, from Mumbles round to Rhossili, has the famous beaches and the higher prices. North Gower, along the estuary, is marsh and salt flats and cockle beds, and is both quieter and better value. Inland around Reynoldston puts you ten minutes from either.
When to book
Gower is close enough to Swansea and Cardiff to be a weekend destination all year, so Fridays and Saturdays are the constraint rather than the season. Midweek availability is usually good even in August if you're flexible on the exact property.
