Wooded gorge on the border, and the shortest drive from England.
The Wye Valley is an AONB straddling the Welsh-English border, and it is the closest properly scenic part of Wales to Bristol, Gloucester and the M4. Tintern Abbey sits in the middle of it, the river runs through a steep wooded gorge, and the whole thing is compact enough to explore without much driving.
Where to stay in Wye Valley
Tintern and Llandogo are the classic valley bases, right on the river. Monmouth is the market town with the restaurants. Up on the hills towards Trellech you get views down the gorge and more space for your money.
When to book
Weekend-driven rather than season-driven, because of how close it is to English cities. Autumn is the standout — the gorge is almost entirely deciduous woodland and the colour in late October is the best in south Wales.
