Llangollen sits in a bend of the fast-flowing Dee in the south of the range, a compact town packed with attractions: a steam railway, a canal wharf, a ruined hilltop castle and, just downstream, Thomas Telford's astonishing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. It hosts the International Musical Eisteddfod each July.

Can you walk across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct?

Yes. A towpath runs alongside the canal channel across Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, 126 feet above the River Dee near Llangollen. There is a railing on the towpath side but only open water on the other, making it a spectacular — and for some, vertiginous — walk. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
