Rhossili is the great set-piece of the Gower Peninsula: a three-mile sweep of west-facing sand backed by downs, with the tidal causeway of Worm's Head snaking out to sea at its southern end. It regularly places on lists of Britain's and Europe's best beaches.

Staying near Rhossili

The most spectacular base on Gower, though a small and sought-after one. Staying on the peninsula lets you walk the beach before the day-trippers and their ten-o'clock car park arrive.

What's here

The beach and the walk out to Worm's Head at low tide; the clifftop path along the downs; the wreck of the Helvetia in the sand; and paragliding off Rhossili Down, the highest point on Gower.

When to visit

Late spring to early autumn for the beach; the Worm's Head crossing is only possible for about two and a half hours either side of low tide.

Common questions

Can you walk out to Worm's Head at Rhossili?

Yes, but only around low tide. The tidal causeway to Worm's Head is safe to cross for roughly two and a half hours either side of low water; outside that window it floods and strands walkers on the headland. Always check the tide tables posted at the coastguard lookout first.

Why is Rhossili Bay so highly rated?

Rhossili combines a three-mile arc of clean sand, dramatic cliffs and downs, the tidal island of Worm's Head and consistent surf, with almost no development behind it because most of the land is National Trust. That mix repeatedly earns it a place among the best beaches in Britain and Europe.
