Betws-y-Coed sits where three rivers meet at the eastern gateway to Eryri, and it has been a tourist village since the Victorian painters arrived in the 1840s. It is the busiest single point in the national park, ringed by the Gwydir Forest and a short drive from most of the big Snowdonia walks.
Staying near Betws-y-Coed
It is the obvious first base for a hot tub break if you want the walks, the outdoor shops and a choice of pubs within stumbling distance. Properties fill early here; look a mile or two out towards Capel Curig or Penmachno for a tub with real quiet and better value.
What's here
Swallow Falls, the Miners' Bridge and the Fairy Glen are all within a couple of miles. The Gwydir Forest tracks start from the village, and Zip World and the Conwy Valley Railway are close by.
When to visit
Autumn and winter are the sweet spot — the waterfalls run hardest after rain, and the coach-trip crowds that clog the village in July have gone.

Is Betws-y-Coed a good base for climbing Snowdon?
It is a comfortable one. Betws-y-Coed is about 25 minutes' drive from the Pen-y-Pass car park for the Miners' Track and Pyg Track, and closer still to the quieter Moel Siabod. Many people prefer it to staying at the foot of the mountain because it has more pubs, shops and evening options.

Yes — the wooded valleys around Betws-y-Coed, Penmachno and Capel Curig hold a good number of hot tub lodges and cabins, many of them tucked into forestry with genuine privacy. They book up well ahead for summer and school holidays, so winter is both easier and cheaper.
