Llanberis sits below the highest mountain in Wales and beside two lakes, hemmed in by the vast terraces of the Dinorwig slate quarry. It is the most practical launch point for Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and one of the most dramatic small towns in Britain to wake up in.
Staying near Llanberis
Stay here if the mountain is the whole point — the Llanberis Path and the mountain railway both start in town. Lakeside and hillside properties above Llyn Padarn give you a tub with a view straight up at the summit.
What's here
The Snowdon Mountain Railway, the National Slate Museum, the Dinorwig "Electric Mountain" and the Llanberis Path all begin in or beside the town. Llyn Padarn is good for cold-water swimming and paddleboarding.
When to visit
Late spring to autumn for the mountain in usable condition; winter for a quiet lakeside tub with the tops under snow. The summit railway runs roughly March to October.

Common questions
Is Llanberis the best place to stay for Snowdon?
It is the most convenient. The Llanberis Path — the longest but least technical route up Yr Wyddfa — starts in the town, as does the Snowdon Mountain Railway, so you can walk up and ride down. Pen-y-Pass, for the more scenic Miners' and Pyg tracks, is a ten-minute drive away.
What is there to do in Llanberis if it rains?
The National Slate Museum is free and undercover, the Electric Mountain area and lakeside cafés fill an afternoon, and a hot tub with the rain coming off the quarry is arguably the point. Betws-y-Coed and its shops are 20 minutes away.
